The finding that EECP increased exercise time but did not effect a statistically significant change in peak VO2 raises an interesting conundrum. One possible explanation for this disparity is that the beneficial effects of EECP in the PEECH study were attributable to a “placebo” effect in the active treatment group in view of the fact that these patients were not blinded to their treatment assignment. The finding that significant improvements in quality-of-life scores decreased over time in the EECP group is also suggestive of a placebo effect.
